“Smile”

Smile - CopyBy Lance Brown, Sports Chaplain at Vanderbilt

What is the worst thing that has ever happen to you? Maybe it is happening to you right now! Did you lose a parent, or child? Was it that relationship that you knew was “the one”, and it all fell apart? Or, maybe you lost your starting position? Or, your job!?

The older I get the more I realize that the worst thing, about bad things, is NOT learning a thing. There are just going to be times, and circumstances, that just won’t make sense to the earth-limited human mind. However, if we could make sense of it all then there would never be a reason to place our hope, our trust, our faith in Christ.

What does God’s Word say?:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. Hebrews 10:35-36

I wished life were easier. I wish loved ones didn’t die. I wish every relationship worked (well, maybe not every relationship). I wish everyone was a starter and no one ever lost their job. The utopian world is a great dream, but that is all it will ever be here on earth, just a dream. However, if your hope, trust and faith are in Christ then there is a place where dreams come true, where folks don’t die and jobs aren’t lost!

When the bad stuff comes crashing in on you, don’t panic. Place your faith in Christ and smile. Smile because you know God has a higher plan for your life than just what you can see and feel. What about today? Let the joy of the Lord bring a smile to your face! Just a thought!
